George Bowering papers, 1962-2007.

Collection includes correspondence, writings, and other materials relating to Canadian author George Bowering. The correspondence features approximately fifty letters from Bowering to his mother, Pearl, dating from 1989 to 2007. Letters discuss personal matters, such as family and health, teaching, writing, and literature and art, with some attention to fellow Canadian authors and artists. Writings include drafts and printed versions of poems, fiction, and criticism dating from the early 1960s. Other materials include clippings, printed ephemera, and photographs.

George Bowering was born in Penticton, B.C. He attended Victoria College and then the University of British Columbia, where he obtained his B.A. in 1960, then his M.A. in 1963. He also attended the University of Western Ontario from 1966-1967. Bowering worked at a variety of jobs: aerial photographer with the RCAF (1954-1957), fruit-picker, and editor of and contributor to magazines in Canada and the United States.
